YMC - Delving Into the Contemporary Trailblazer
YMC (You Must Create) celebrates over 20 years of innovating and developing the unique YMC signature look. Born in London back in 1995, the brand takes their name from the industrialist pioneer Raymond Lowry, “You must create your own design style”.
The brand’s ethos of taking a traditional clothing silhouette and giving it the now recognisable YMC treatment, ensures that these timeless pieces get a rebirth into the contemporary fashion arena, and rightly so.
Initially inspired by workwear and military clothing, the brand has ventured on to creating a persona of understated and timeless garments.
Made entirely from a pigment-dyed loopback cotton, the Sugden Zip Sweatshirt featured above, gives a very particular nod to the classic sportswear we know and love. With a quarter neck zip closure and open collar, the piece totes an understated yet identifiable style that has become synonymous with YMC’s design ethos.
Each collection that comes out of the offices of YMC takes clear influence from creative director Fraser Moss’s passion for music, literature and the arts, along with his enduring post-punk, DIY attitude.
Harnessing and utilising cultural influences from around the board allows the brand’s image to culminate into what is now loved by so many people. With an ever growing and spreading identity, the brand’s popularity seems to show no signs of slowing.
With an attention to detail and the heritage that brought these pieces alive, these five pocket straight leg jeans were manufactured through a combination of vintage union machinery and traditional construction methods. Creating a contemporary update whilst maintaining respect and appreciation for the style’s roots.
The Tearaway Jeans are made from a garment dyed heavy cotton canvas, with lapped seams and a twin needle topstitching. The authenticity is in the detail.
Since YMC’s beginning in 1995, the label has established itself as one of the most enduring and influential independent brands to come out of the UK.
With its deckchair style vertical stripe detailing, the Bowie Zip Shirt is crafted from a super comfortable cotton and linen fabrication, also featuring a zip closure fastening with corozo button cuffs. The simplicity and lightweight functionality of the piece is what has become signature trademarks of YMC’s cultural contribution.
With each season bringing different inspirations to the forefront than the last, the Erkin Jacket brings something significant of its own. With a kimono style collar, corozo woodcut buttons, raglan sleeves and constructed from a quilted Italian cotton.
Uniting multiple influences to culminate into unique, contemporary pieces is what allows YMC to rightfully set itself out into a broad landscape of their own making.
